CAOS Wizard of Oz.
On 29th & 30th December, A number of our group were at the
Westcliff Theatre in Clacton, to photograph the latest production
by Clacton Amateur Operatic Society, of The Wizard of Oz.

Christmas Dinner.
6th December, The Workshop held it's second Christmas Dinner.
The event was well attended by members and their partners
Mike Vaughan Chatfield presented gifts to several members in
appreciation of their work on behalf of the group in the past year.

NEPW Visit 'ROLLERWORLD', Colchester.
On 27th November, several members of the group travelled to Colchester
to visit the 'ROLLERWORLD' skating rink, for a two hour session of
action photography.
They were able to try their skills at taking pictures of fast moving skaters
under low light conditions and also with flash.
The use of various shutter speeds to give an impression of speed was tried,
as well as the use of flash to arrest movement.
We would like to thank the staff of 'ROLLERWORLD, for their kind
co-operation in allowing us to use their facilities for our work.

The Best of Tendring
PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
The 2002 Best of Tendring Photography competition has ended and the
entries have been judged.
The results were announced on 18th November 2002, at a reception
for prizewinners, in the Chairman's Parlour at Clacton Town Hall.
The prizes were were distributed to the winners by representatives of the
sponsors and the judges.

NEPW visit CPW Colchester
On 12th November several members of the Workshop paid
a visit to CPW at their premises in Colchester.
Members of the staff demonstrated a range of digital cameras,
and scanned members negatives and prints and showed how
to produce quality digital copies from the latest ink jet printers.
We were allowed to use the various cameras, ranging from
fairly simple cameras to very sophisticated SLR cameras.
The pros and cons of different types of scanners were discussed
and prints were made to illustrate the points raised.
The evening was informative and entertaining, and no doubt some
of our group will soon be dabbling in Digital Photography
alongside the more traditional techniques.

Guest Speaker John Clayden
On 24th September we had John Clayden, a portrait specialist
from the RPS, as our guest speaker.
John has a less than orthodox view on portraiture.
His approach to the art of portrait photography is both refreshing
and inspiring, especially for beginners, as he uses very simple but
effective lighting setups. He showed us several of his own prints, and
cast a critical, but constructive eye over some of our members portraits.
He then took us through a practical portrait session on lighting set ups,
use of reflectors, how to determine the optimum exposures etc.

NEPW Photography Exhibition
The NEPW Photography Exhibition was held at the Town Hall,
Clacton from 18th September to 20th inclusive.
A wide range of Photographs by members were displayed including,
portraits, landscapes, architectural, abstract etc.
The photographs were in colour and B&W, and were produced by both
traditional film, and digital techniques.

Visit by Colbayns School
On 10th September nine pupils from the Upper Sixth Form
'A' Level Photography Course at Colbayns High School were guests of
the Workshop.
Phil Longshore their tutor demonstrated a video movie, made by Lisa which
utilised animated digital images and sound.
Members were shown the school group's contribution to the Digital
Exhibition held at Olympia in January where their work was featured.
Rebecca, Donna, Emma , Kerry, Clare, Caroline and Lisa displayed their
outstanding images and folios with the members.
We were most impressed by their creative skills and dedication to the
art of photography.
They showed outstanding computer skills in image manipulation and
enhancement as well as in animation, fading and disolving images
They were congratulated along with their tutor on the quality of their work
which was both refreshing and innovative.
It is hoped that some may attend future meetings and become
permanent members of the workshop.
Members of the workshop namely Cliff, Peter, Paul, Bob, Ivan and Roger
displayed some of their work and invited comments from the meeting.

The Christmas Dinner has been arranged for 6th December.

Digital Evening
On 17th September members will attend a special evening devoted to
Digital photography at CPW in Colchester.
|
Students Visit NEPW
The meeting for 10th September will feature the Portfolios of the
A level photography students from Colbayns High School.
The nine students will also provide a multi media presentation as
well as share in viewing our work.

The Best of Tendring
PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Essex County Council and many sponsors,
The competition will run from 16th August to 31st October, 2002, with results
announced by 18th November 2002.

Photo Location Evening.
On the21st May the members spent the evening taking photos in Clacton.
We divided into three groups, each group visited a different area of the town to
obtain their pictures
Unfortunately the weather turned out to be dull and overcast, which presented
a challenge to the photographers to try to produce interesting images.

Visit by Colin Westgate FRPS.
On the14th May we had a visit from Colin Westgate FRPS.
Several members brought along their pictures for evaluation with regard
to entering them for an RPS panel.
Colin gave valuable advice on printing, composition, mounting and
general presentation for a panel and commented favourably on the standard
of work presented by the members.
He also showed a number of his own prints and answered several questions
from the audience on photography in general.
Colin Westgate is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and a Master
of the International Federation of Photographic Art.
He is also a Member of the London Salon of Photography and Arena.
He sits on the Licentiate, Associate and Fellowship (photographic printing),
panels of the Royal Photographic Society. He has exhibited widely, and has
work in numerous private collections, as well as in the Tyng collection of the
Royal Photographic Society.
He also runs "Quest Photography Workshops". Established in1994,
the programme contains a very comprehensive selection of some 50 events
throughout the year. Most courses are for one or two days, and cover such
subjects as advanced and basic darkroom printing (mono & colour),
exhibition printing lith printing, infra red photography, toning, print finishing,
digital printing, church architecture, street photography, photo essays,
large format techniques, cyanotypes, kallitypes, bromoil, natural history
photography and much more.

Me and My Girl. (CAOS)
We were invited by Clacton Amateur Operatic Society (CAOS) to make a
photographic record of their latest production of 'Me and My Girl'.
On 11th & 12th May, some of our members attended the technical and dress
rehearsals at the Princes Theatre, in Clacton Town Hall.
Despite working in unfamiliar surroundings we produced numerous
excellent prints, and several of the cast had copies of the photographs
for their personal albums.

NEPW Visit Snappy Snaps.
On the evening of 16th April we visited 'Snappy Snaps' in Station Rd,
Clacton to see how they achieve their 'One Hour' colour printing service.
On arrival we were greeted by the proprietor, Alan Roast and his wife Pauline,
who introduced us to their technicians, Hayley and Paula.
During our visit Alan showed us the film processing machine, and developed
some of our films. The machine can process a film in about ten minutes.
Hayley demonstrated the printing equipment and produced prints
from the films and also enlargements from some of the members negatives.
Paula showed us how the digital printing system could be used to produce
calendars, birthday cards, etc from CD's or memory cards. The system can
also copy and enlarge prints.
Refreshments and a buffet were also provided.

Aerial Photography without an Aircraft.
Our guest speaker for March 19th, was Janus van Helfteren from Van Cols
Creative Designs who are based at Gt. Horksley near Colchester.
He explained how he takes aerial photographs using a telescopic mast with
a remotely operated camera platform, mounted on the back of a landrover.
He showed photographs taken using the mast and talked about some of
the problems encountered when using the system in windy conditions.
He also spoke about his commercial photography, demonstrating his creative
talent and his own unique approach to the various subjects with numerous
photos taken for magazines and adverts.

R.P.S. Visits Clacton.
Twenty Four photographers entered their work for assessment at the
Royal Photographic Society's Distinction Advisory day.
at the Princes Theatre, Clacton on Sea.
Nine of the entries were from NEPW members.
The assessors, Dr Anne Owen FRPS, Jack Jackson FRPS
and Colin Westgate FRPS made constructive comments on the
work and gave advice on improving the composition, printing and
presentation of the images.
In addition there were display panels of photographs from NEPW members
and also from Loughton Camera Club, who provided some excellent images.

Still life, with John Anderson
Mr. John Anderson will be our guest speaker on the 5th March
John held the office of secretary for the Eastern Region of the
Royal Photographic Society for a number of years.
He will talk about still life photography, in particular photographing
glassware and pottery his talk will include many of his own pictures.
There will be practical work if time allows, so bring your cameras/tripods etc.

R.P.S. Distinctions Advisory Day.
The NEPW will be hosting the Royal Photographic Society's
Distinction Advisory Day.
The event will take place at the Princes Theatre, Clacton on Sea on
Sunday 17th March 2002
A number of local Photographic societies will have some of their
member's work on display.
